READ-IN - February 2nd 6-8pm
OCLC’s AmeriCorps members are partnering with UNC’s Project Literacy for National Literacy Action Week/One Week of Literacy to host the 23rd National African-American Read-In on Thursday, February 2nd from 6-8 PM in the main room of the Campus Y on UNC’s campus. The Read-In will feature public readings of works authored or spoken by African-Americans. A discussion, as well as performances by local poets Nell Britton and Alexis Pauline Gumbs, will follow. If you are interested in participating as a reader or you would like to submit a work to be read, please contact Diana Hofler at dhofler@orangeliteracy.org or 919-636-4457. All members of the community are welcome and encouraged to participate as audience members and/or readers.

Karen/Burmese Students Speak to Capacity Crowd
Our thanks to OCLC students Naing Tun, Aung Thu, Hsar Walter and East Chapel Hill High School student (and OCLC volunteer) Naw Naw who spoke to over 50 tutors and interested members of the community about Karen and Burmese culture, history. clothing language and food as well as their experiences as refugees adapting to life in Orange County. OCLC offers free individualized instruction for adults who want to improve their reading, writing, basic math and English language skills or to prepare for the GED. OCLC matches trained volunteer tutors with adult learners.
