On February 27, 2019, attendees of the annual Writers for Readers enjoyed a night of literary discussions. Bestselling novelist John Grisham joined us as he interviewed Gene Nichol about his new book, The Faces of Poverty in North Carolina: Stories from Our Invisible Citizens (UNC Press, 2018).

GENE R. NICHOL is the Boyd Tinsley Distinguished Professor of Law at UNC-Chapel Hill. From 2008 until 2015, he served as director of the UNC Center for Poverty, Work, and Opportunity. He regularly publishes opinion pieces in the News and Observer, and his writings have appeared in The Nation, the Washington Post, and a variety of other publications. Read Nichol’s guest blog post on the UNC Press about Orange Literacy and what we’re doing to empower our community through literacy.
