9th Annual Writers for Readers

Put four mystery and thriller writers together in a room and there’s bound to be a little drama, a lot of intrigue and a few red herrings. Join us on April 5th for a conversation moderated by Daniel Wallace (author of The Cat’s Pajamas) with special guests #1 New York Times bestselling authors Sandra Brown (author of Friction) and Tim Johnston (author of Descent), along with two authors to be revealed soon. Our panelists will explore the whos, whats, whys and hows of great suspense writing.

Sandra Brown is the author of sixty-seven New York Times bestsellers, including Friction, Mean Streak, Deadline, Low Pressure, Lethal, Rainwater, Tough Customer, Smash Cut, Smoke Screen, and Play Dirty. Writing professionally since 1981, Brown has published over seventy novels and has upwards of eighty million copies of her books in print worldwide.  Her work has been translated into thirty-four languages.

Tim Johnston is the author of the debut adult novel Descent, the story collection Irish Girl, and the young adult novel Never So Green. Published in 2009, the stories in Irish Girl won an O. Henry Prize, the New Letters Award for Writers, and the Gival Press Short Story Award, while the collection itself won the 2009 Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Short Fiction. In 2005 the title story, “Irish Girl,” was included in the David Sedaris anthology of favorites, Children Playing Before a Statue of Hercules. Johnston’s stories have also appeared in New England Review, New Letters, the Iowa Review, the Missouri Review, DoubleTake, Best Life Magazine, and Narrative Magazine, among others. He holds degrees from the University of Iowa and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He currently teaches in the creative writing program at the University of Memphis.

Julia Dahl writes about crime and justice for CBSNews.com. Her first novel, Invisible City, was named one of the Boston Globe’s Best Books of 2014 and was nominated for an Edgar Award for Best First Novel. Her second novel, Run You Down, is now out in paperback, and the third novel in her Rebekah Roberts series will be published in 2017. Julia was born and raised in Fresno, California and now lives in Brooklyn, NY with her husband and son.

Michael Malone is the author of ten novels, a collection of short stories, and two works of nonfiction. Educated at Carolina and at Harvard, he is now a professor in Theater Studies at Duke University. Among his prizes are the Edgar, the O. Henry, the Writers Guild Award, and the Emmy. He lives in Hillsborough, North Carolina, with his wife.
